Radiology Report Typing Practice
The Radiology pack loads report language into ClinicalTypingLab, a free trainer that streams clinical text for you to type. It adds 999 items and gives extra weight to 693 general items, most of them imaging reads already in the general corpus. This page covers what the pack holds and how to practice report typing with it.

How radiology reports are built
Typing in radiology means typing reports, and reports have a fixed shape: indication, technique, comparison, findings by organ, and an impression that repeats the key finding with a category and a recommendation. Much of the vocabulary is measurement: nodules in millimeters, masses in two or three dimensions such as 3.1 x 2.4 cm, lymph nodes in short axis, attenuation in Hounsfield units, Doppler velocities in cm/s and uptake as SUVmax.
Classification systems appear in almost every report: Fleischner and Lung-RADS for lung nodules, BI-RADS for the breast, LI-RADS for the liver, Bosniak for cystic renal masses, TI-RADS for thyroid nodules and PI-RADS for the prostate. Each category carries a follow-up interval or a next step, so a wrong digit changes what happens next. Around the reports sit protocoling, contrast safety, critical-result calls and interventional radiology procedure notes.
What the radiology pack adds
Report lines are the largest part of the pack, 362 of them, laid out the way a report is written: technique and comparison lines, findings by modality and organ, then impressions. They cover chest films with lines and tubes, CT of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, trauma, neuro CT, CTA and MRI, spine, musculoskeletal imaging, ultrasound with Doppler, breast imaging, nuclear medicine and PET, fluoroscopy and angiography. Lines from the pack:
- Technique: Axial CT images of the chest were obtained without intravenous contrast
- Comparison: CT A/P 14 mo prior
- Solid 7 mm RML nodule, recommend CT at 6 to 12 mo per Fleischner 2017 guidelines
- 2.2 cm observation in seg 7 w/ nonrim APHE and nonperipheral washout, LR-5
- Nodule 1: 1.6 cm solid hypoechoic right mid pole nodule, TR4, 4 points, FNA recommended
- CTDIvol 8.6 mGy and DLP 342 mGy-cm
- Critical result discussed by telephone with the ordering physician at 14:35, read-back confirmed
The 304 note phrases cover the work around the report: protocoling and contrast safety, IR procedure and consult notes with French sizes, needle gauges and fluoroscopy dose, drain rounding, contrast reactions, addenda and discharge instructions. Drug entries are contrast agents, radiotracers and IR procedural drugs, with doses such as gadoterate meglumine 0.1 mmol/kg iv x1, equal to 0.2 mL/kg. Echo, EKG and pathology reads are left to other packs.
How to practice report typing
Choose Radiology from the Specialty menu and turn on Radiology & Path Findings. About half of the draws come from the pack and the rest from the general corpus, and because the pack also emphasizes the general corpus's imaging reads, a session with only that chip on stays close to reading-room language. The Abbreviations toggle switches every line between its spelled-out form and the shorthand radiologists type, such as c/w, GGN, CBD and LR-5.
For dictation-style practice, set Abbreviations to Full and use Block mode, which stops the stream at each error until you fix it. Measurements are the thing to watch: 3.1 x 2.4 cm, 14.5 Fr and TR4 all need the number row, and one slip turns a finding into a different one. When your accuracy holds above 95 percent, switch to Cascade, which lets errors pass and gives a truer speed reading. For IR notes, add Note Phrases, Procedures and both drug chips with the dosing slider around 40 percent.
Ten to fifteen minutes on one setup is enough to show patterns in the per-key heatmap. AI Mode works on top of the pack. You do not need an account, and your progress stays in your browser. If you also type pathology, see pathology report typing.
Common questions
Is this a radiology transcription typing test?
It works as practice for one. The report lines follow the format radiologists and transcriptionists type, and the trainer reports WPM and accuracy as you go. It streams individual lines rather than whole dictated reports, so use it to build speed on the vocabulary and the measurements.
Which classification systems are included?
Fleischner 2017, Lung-RADS v2022, BI-RADS, LI-RADS v2018, Bosniak 2019, ACR TI-RADS, O-RADS US and PI-RADS v2.1, most with the follow-up language that goes with the category. CAD-RADS, Deauville scores and ASPECTS appear too.
Does the pack include interventional radiology?
Yes. IR procedure notes, periprocedural consult lines, drain rounding and discharge instructions are in the Note Phrases category, and IR drugs with doses are in the drug categories.
