Typing Practice for Nurses

Choosing Nursing in the Role menu moves the trainer toward what nurses chart across a shift: system assessments, reassessments, medication administration, safety checks and handoff. It also mixes in the largest of the role packs, written the way nursing notes and flowsheet comments are actually typed.

What changes when you pick the nursing role

Every note line in the trainer is tagged by the part of the chart it belongs to, and the nursing role reweights those tags. Lines tagged as nursing charting get the strongest boost. Head-to-toe exam lines and patient teaching come up much more often, and results, discharge and plan lines a little more. Physician-style history, review of systems, differential reasoning and consult phrasing are turned down but not removed.

Among the categories you have switched on, note phrases, scores and vitals (the Physiology and Labs chip), generic drug names, symptoms and bedside procedures get more weight. Disease names, anatomy and brand names get less, and imaging reads much less.

What the nursing pack adds

The pack adds 579 items: 450 charting phrases plus scales, bedside procedures, wound findings and skin and device problems. It also emphasizes 113 general lines, including system assessments, Braden and Morse lines and reassessments. The phrases cover admission intake, vitals with reassessment, each body system, telemetry, infusions, lines and drains, wound staging, transfusion checks, falls and restraints, withdrawal scales, SBAR calls, teaching, discharge and care plans. Examples with shorthand on:

  • A&Ox4, speech clear, follows commands appropriately
  • Abd soft, ND, BS active x4 quadrants
  • Lorazepam 1 mg IV given for CIWA score 14, CIWA 8 on reassessment at 1 hr
  • Critical potassium 6.4 called by lab at 0540, read back and verified, provider notified at 0542
  • SBAR to provider: new AFib, HR 140s, BP 102/58, requesting bedside eval
  • Bladder scan 650 mL, straight catheterized for 600 mL of clear yellow urine
  • Nursing dx: acute pain r/t surgical incision AEB pain 7/10 and guarding

Single terms include scales such as POSS, COWS, PAINAD and FLACC, procedures such as PICC dressing change and implanted port access, and wound terms such as tunneling, slough and deep tissue pressure injury. The pack also carries route-specific dosing strings for 27 drugs common on the MAR, which attach to drug names whenever the dosing slider is above zero, for example "hydromorphone 0.5 mg iv q3h prn". ICU ventilator management and obstetric nursing are left to the specialty packs.

Using the nursing role with a specialty

The specialty sets the vocabulary and the role sets the kind of charting. A specialty pack is mixed in at roughly half of the draws, and the nursing weights then apply to its lines as well as to the general corpus. Pair nursing with the ICU or cardiac ICU pack for ventilator, drip and line vocabulary, or with pediatrics or OB/GYN for vocabulary this pack leaves out. The category chips filter both packs, so Note Phrases alone gives you nursing lines, specialty note lines and general note lines together. AI Mode works on top of the role and the specialty, steering the stream toward your own weak key transitions.

Typical sessions

The shift assessment preset turns on note phrases, scores and vitals, and symptoms with shorthand on, no doses and cascade mode, so errors flow past the way they do when you chart quickly. The med pass preset pairs generic drugs with phrases and procedures, doses on nearly every drug and block mode, which stops on each error so dose, route and frequency are typed exactly. The third preset adds the ICU pack to the nursing role. Short sessions fit between tasks, and your progress stays in your browser with no account.

Common questions

Can I practice spelled-out charting instead of shorthand?

Yes. The abbreviation toggle switches every pack phrase between its spelled-out form and shorthand such as A&Ox4, C/D/I and r/t. At work, follow your facility's approved abbreviation list.

How do I practice medication administration lines?

Turn on the generic drugs chip and raise the dosing slider, as the med pass preset does. The nursing pack supplies dose, route and frequency strings for 27 common medications. Set the slider to zero to practice drug names alone.

Is this a nursing documentation course?

No. It is typing practice. The lines are written the way nurses chart, but the trainer does not teach assessment or give clinical advice.
