Gastroenterology Typing Practice

This page sets the trainer up with the gastroenterology and hepatology pack: endoscopy and procedure report lines, consult and clinic phrases, and GI drugs with their doses. Choose Gastroenterology in the Specialty menu or open a preset below, and the pack is mixed into the general clinical corpus.

Where GI typing happens

GI and hepatology notes come from the procedure suite, the consult service and the clinic. Endoscopy reports follow a fixed skeleton: indication, consent, ASA class and sedation, landmarks reached, graded findings, what was done, and when to come back. The grades are a vocabulary of their own: LA grade for esophagitis, Prague C and M for Barrett esophagus, Forrest class for ulcers, the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale, and the Mayo endoscopic subscore.

Consults for GI bleeding, cirrhosis, pancreatitis and IBD flares carry the numbers: MELD-Na and Child-Pugh, the serum-ascites albumin gradient and ascitic neutrophil count, hemoglobin trends, and liver stiffness in kPa. Recommendations are usually orders spelled out in full, with dose, route and duration. Standard shorthand (EGD, ERCP, EUS, TIPS, SBP, HE, UGIB, MASLD, BMs) runs through all of it.

What the gastroenterology pack contains

The pack adds 999 items and gives extra weight to 783 GI-related items already in the general corpus. Its 505 note phrases follow the real workflow: GI bleed triage and pre-endoscopy decisions, cirrhosis care (ascites, SBP, encephalopathy, varices, transplant referral), alcohol-associated hepatitis scoring, pancreatitis, IBD from steroid-refractory colitis to biologic induction, nutrition, bowel prep and the procedure notes themselves. The 128 report lines lean toward endoscopic, elastography and pathology language, since the general corpus already has many basic CT findings.

  • Duodenal bulb ulcer 12 mm with a nonbleeding visible vessel, Forrest IIa
  • Salmon-colored mucosa from 34 to 40 cm, Prague C4M6, no nodules or ulceration
  • Decompensated alcohol-associated cirrhosis, MELD-Na 27, Child-Pugh C
  • Ascitic fluid SAAG 1.9, total protein 1.1, PMN 42, portal hypertensive ascites without infection
  • Albumin 1.5 g/kg on day 1 and 1 g/kg on day 3 for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
  • Liver stiffness 9.8 kPa with CAP 302 dB/m

Dosing covers 112 drugs and names the indication where the dose depends on it: octreotide 50 mcg/h iv infusion x 2 to 5 days, ceftriaxone 2 g iv daily for SBP, infliximab 5 mg/kg iv at weeks 0, 2, and 6, then every 8 weeks. Newer agents such as mirikizumab, etrasimod, seladelpar and resmetirom are in the drug lists too.

How to practice with the GI pack

With the pack on, about half of the draws are GI items and the rest come from the general corpus; the category chips apply to both. For endoscopy reports, turn on Radiology & Path Findings, Procedures and Anatomy and leave the drug chips off. For consult days, use Note Phrases, Physiology & Labs and the generic drug chip, and raise the dosing slider so drug names come with orders attached.

The Abbreviations toggle switches every pack phrase between its full and short forms: "Start lactulose 25 mL every 2 hours until 2 soft bowel movements, then titrate to 2 to 3 daily" becomes "Start lactulose 25 mL q2h until 2 soft BMs, then titrate to 2 to 3 daily". Shorthand suits consult notes; spelled-out text suits formal procedure reports. Block mode stops you at each error, which is the right place to learn grades like IIa and C4M6. Cascade lets mistakes pass as they would during live charting, so use it once your accuracy is steady. Realistic term frequency keeps common findings in front; Even surfaces the rarer ones. Aim for five to ten minutes most days. AI Mode can run on top of any of this, nothing requires an account, and progress stays in your browser.

Common questions

Can I practice only colonoscopy and EGD reports?

Close to it. Select Gastroenterology and turn on only Radiology and Path Findings. You get the pack's endoscopy, elastography and pathology lines mixed with general imaging and pathology findings, because the chips filter the general corpus too.

Does the pack include surgical operative notes?

No. Operative detail belongs to the general surgery pack. This pack covers what gastroenterologists and hepatologists write: endoscopy and procedure reports, consults, clinic notes and discharge lines.
