Typing Practice for Residents and Physicians

Choosing Resident / physician in the Role menu weights the trainer toward short daily notes and the documents around them: problem lists with plans, orders and titrations, discharge summaries, consults and patient messages. A pack of lines written the way residents and attendings type them is mixed in with the general corpus.

What changes when you pick the physician role

Note lines in the trainer are tagged by the part of the note they belong to, and this role reweights them. Progress and plan lines come up much more often, followed by orders, discharge summary phrasing, assessment and consult lines, procedure notes and results. Long histories and full review of systems are turned down, and nursing charting is turned far down.

Among the categories you have switched on, note phrases and generic drug names get the most added weight. Disease names, lab values, procedures and imaging reads are slightly up, and symptoms and anatomy are down.

What the physician pack adds

The pack adds 392 items, 361 of them note phrases, and emphasizes 156 general lines, mostly continue, hold, start and increase plan lines, discharge diagnoses, consult lines and lab trends. Problem-list lines pair a diagnosis with an action and realistic labs. Other lines cover orders with hold parameters, procedure note steps, consult recommendations, START/STOP/CHANGE medication reconciliation, handoff, attestations, result notes, prior authorizations and letters. Examples with shorthand on:

  • #AKI on CKD 3b: Cr 2.4 from baseline 1.6, likely prerenal, s/p 1 L LR, recheck BMP in the morning
  • Hold metoprolol for SBP below 95 or HR below 55
  • LP at L3-L4 in L lateral decubitus position, OP 18 cm H2O
  • STOP glipizide given hypoglycemia during admission
  • Signed out to night float w/ an I-PASS handoff
  • I saw and evaluated the pt, discussed w/ the resident, and agree w/ the findings and plan as documented
  • Your cholesterol has improved on atorvastatin, please continue the same dose

Portal replies and letters read the same with the abbreviation toggle on or off, because those texts go to patients and payers. Fourteen report lines cover reads physicians enter themselves, such as "My read of the CXR: new RLL consolidation, no effusion". The pack also supplies dosing strings for 27 inpatient drugs, some of which name the indication, and these attach to drug names when the dosing slider is above zero. Specialty procedures and ICU ventilator orders are left to the specialty packs.

Using the physician role with a specialty

The role handles note types and the specialty handles vocabulary. A specialty pack is mixed in at roughly half of the draws, and the physician weights apply to its lines too. With nephrology, the pack's plan, order and progress lines are favored over its long histories, and the ICU pack adds the ventilator and drip language this pack leaves out. For clinic work, family medicine pairs with the result notes and portal replies in the role pack. The category chips filter both packs. AI Mode works on top of the role and the specialty, steering the stream toward your own weak key transitions.

Typical sessions

The progress note sprint turns on phrases, generic drugs and lab values with shorthand on, doses on most drug names and cascade mode, close to typing during rounds. The discharge and letters preset uses phrases with generic and brand drugs spelled out and block mode, since discharge summaries and letters are written in full. The third preset adds the ICU pack for a critical care rotation. Your progress stays in your browser, and no account is needed.

Common questions

Is this role useful for attendings as well as residents?

Yes. The pack includes teaching physician attestations, result notes, portal replies, prior authorizations and letters alongside daily notes and orders.

Why do portal replies look the same with abbreviations on?

Messages and letters go to patients and payers, so the pack keeps them in plain language whichever way the toggle is set.

Does the role change how my speed is scored?

No. The role only changes which lines appear. Speed, accuracy and the per-key stats are measured the same way for every role.
