Typing Practice for Medical Students
Choosing Medical student in the Role menu weights the trainer toward the long, complete notes students write: full histories and exams, differentials with reasons, and problem-based plans. A pack of H&P and presentation-style lines is mixed in with the general corpus.

What changes when you pick the student role
Note lines in the trainer are tagged by the part of the note they belong to, and the student role reweights them. History, assessment, review of systems and exam lines come up much more often, and plan, daily progress and results lines more than usual. Orders, procedure notes, discharge phrasing and nursing charting are turned down.
Among the categories you have switched on, note phrases, disease names, symptoms and lab indices get more weight, to match differential thinking. Brand drug names get much less. The student pack has no dosing strings of its own; drug names pick up doses from the general corpus when you raise the dosing slider.
What the student pack adds
The pack adds 406 items, 360 of them note phrases, and emphasizes 104 general lines such as ROS negatives, system exam lines, family and social history and overnight events. The phrases follow the complete H&P, with a review of systems in "endorses" and "denies" form and exam lines that name the findings students are taught to document. Assessment lines open with a summary statement and give reasons for and against each diagnosis. Plans use the "#Problem:" format, and progress lines read the way they are presented on rounds. Examples with shorthand on:
- The pt is a 67 y/o man w/ a PMH significant for HFrEF, CKD stage 3, and T2DM
- Respiratory: endorses DOE and a dry cough, denies wheezing or hemoptysis
- Neck: JVP est 12 cm H2O, +HJR
- PE is less likely given a Wells score of 0, no tachycardia, and no hypoxia
- #AKI: creatinine 1.8 from baseline 0.9, likely prerenal, give IV fluids, hold lisinopril, trend BMP
- Moving on to her second problem, hyperkalemia
- Learning issue: differences between SIADH and cerebral salt wasting
Twenty-one report lines cover structured reads students are expected to type, such as a systematic EKG ("EKG: rate 72, sinus rhythm, normal axis, PR 160 ms, QRS 90 ms, QTc 430 ms, no hypertrophy or ischemic changes") and fluid analyses. Single terms add reasoning quantities like Winter's formula, the A-a gradient and the delta-delta gap, and named findings such as pronator drift, lid lag and fluid wave. Billing language, orders syntax and specialty content are left out.
Using the student role with a specialty
Set the specialty to match your rotation. The specialty pack supplies vocabulary at roughly half of the draws, and the student weights apply to its lines too, so cardiology gives you cardiology terms with the history, exam and assessment emphasis of the student role. General surgery, pediatrics and psychiatry work the same way. The category chips filter both packs. AI Mode works on top of the role and the specialty, steering the stream toward your own weak key transitions.
Typical sessions
The H&P write-up preset turns on phrases, symptoms and diseases spelled out, with no doses and block mode, which stops on each error while you work through long histories. The differential and labs preset adds lab indices and structured reads with shorthand on and cascade mode, closer to the pace of a progress note. The third preset pairs the student role with the cardiology pack. Short, regular sessions work better than occasional long ones, and your session history stays in your browser with no account.

Common questions
Should I practice with abbreviations on or off?
Match what your team expects. The toggle switches every pack phrase between its spelled-out and shorthand forms, so you can practice the H&P in full and progress notes in shorthand.
Does the student role help with preclinical terminology?
Only partly. The role mainly reweights note phrases, so for plain vocabulary drills the category chips matter more. Turn on diseases, anatomy and physiology and leave note phrases off.
Do I need an account?
No. Nothing requires an account, and your settings and progress stay in your browser.
