Psychiatry Typing Practice

The Psychiatry pack brings the language of psychiatric evaluations, inpatient progress notes and consult-liaison work into ClinicalTypingLab, a free trainer that streams clinical note text for you to type. It adds 1,000 items and gives extra weight to 384 general items that psychiatry notes use often. Below is what the pack contains and how to set up a session.

What psychiatry notes are made of

Psychiatric documentation is mostly narrative, and much of it lands in the mental status exam. Every visit restates appearance, behavior, speech, mood (often in the patient's own words, in quotes), affect, thought process and content, perception, cognition, insight and judgment. Risk assessment appears in nearly every note: suicidal and homicidal ideation with intent and plan, the C-SSRS result, risk and protective factors, the safety plan and the observation level.

Scores come up constantly: PHQ-9 and GAD-7 in clinic, CIWA-Ar and COWS during withdrawal, AIMS for anyone on an antipsychotic, and MoCA on the consult service. Medication plans carry exact titrations and the labs that go with them, such as lithium levels, clozapine ANC schedules and metabolic monitoring. Consult-liaison notes add delirium, catatonia, capacity and hold language. The shorthand is dense: SI/HI, AVH, PMR, BIBPD, DTS, LAI and EPS all appear in ordinary notes.

What the psychiatry pack adds

The pack holds 471 note phrases: intake histories with collateral, substance use with last use, DSM-5-TR diagnosis lines with specifiers, risk formulations in neutral clinical language, medication titration and monitoring, withdrawal management, buprenorphine induction, long-acting injectables, ECT and TMS, and discharge and hold language. Its 147 report lines are where the structured exam lives: the mental status exam domain by domain, rating-scale results with their severity bands, drug levels, and EEG and imaging reads relevant to psychosis and delirium. Lines from the pack:

  • Speech: pressured, loud, difficult to interrupt
  • Thought content: endorses passive SI w/o intent or plan
  • C-SSRS screen: suicidal behavior within the past 3 months, high risk
  • Downgrade from 1:1 to q15 min checks given improved safety
  • Clozapine level 520 w/ norclozapine 290, ratio 1.8
  • CIWA-Ar q4h w/ symptom-triggered lorazepam
  • Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale global score 3, moderate akathisia

Drug coverage includes newer agents such as xanomeline-trospium and zuranolone, the long-acting injectable formulations, and ADHD and substance-use medications. Dosing strings cover 122 drugs. Where a dose depends on the indication, the indication is part of the string, as in haloperidol 5 mg im x1 for severe agitation.

How to practice with the psychiatry pack

Choose Psychiatry from the Specialty menu above the category chips. About half of what you type then comes from the pack and the rest from the general corpus, and the chips filter both. The mental status exam and scale results sit in the report-line category, so turn on Radiology & Path Findings as well as Note Phrases. With psychiatry selected, that chip carries MSE and scale lines alongside general imaging and pathology reads.

For an MSE drill, use Note Phrases, Symptoms & Signs and Radiology & Path Findings with abbreviations on and Block mode, which stops the stream until you fix each error. Domain labels, colons and quoted mood statements are easy to mistype at speed. For medication management, add both drug chips and set the dosing slider to 60 percent or more so titrations and injectable intervals appear with their doses. Flip the Abbreviations toggle to practice both forms of a line: Denies suicidal ideation for 3 consecutive days, engaged in safety planning becomes Denies SI for 3 consecutive days, engaged in safety planning.

Keep sessions to 10 or 15 minutes on one setup, then move to Cascade mode, which lets errors pass, to measure your speed. AI Mode works on top of the pack and steers the stream toward the key transitions that slow you down. You do not need an account, and your progress stays in your browser. Consult work overlaps with neurology for delirium, seizures and cognition.

Common questions

Is there a psychiatry typing test?

The trainer works as one. Pick Psychiatry, choose your categories and type; WPM, accuracy and streak update as you go, and your session history stays in your browser. Cascade mode with abbreviations on gives the reading closest to charting in real time.

Why are mental status exam lines in the report category?

The trainer has one category for read-style lines that report a finding or a result. In the psychiatry pack that category holds the structured MSE, rating-scale results and drug levels, which are the psychiatric equivalent of a read. Turn on the Radiology and Path Findings chip to include them.

How does the pack write about suicide risk?

In neutral clinical language: passive or active ideation, intent, plan, protective factors, the C-SSRS result, the safety plan and the observation level. It does not include detailed descriptions of methods.
