Typing Practice for Medical Scribes

Picking Medical scribe in the Role menu changes which kinds of note lines the trainer gives you. The stream leans toward the history, review of systems, exam and orders a scribe types during a visit, and a pack of scribe-style lines is mixed in with the general corpus.

What changes when you pick the scribe role

Every phrase and report line in the trainer, from the general corpus or any pack, is tagged by the part of the note it belongs to, and the scribe role reweights those tags. History of present illness, review of systems and exam lines come up much more often, and orders and assessment lines somewhat more. Nursing charting is turned far down, and consult, procedure and progress-note phrasing appear less than in the general mix.

Categories shift too, among the chips you have switched on. Note phrases and symptoms get more weight, and brand drug names a little more, since patients tend to report their medications by brand. Anatomy terms and imaging reads get less. Nothing is removed; it just appears less often.

What the scribe pack adds

The pack adds 441 items, 390 of them note phrases, and emphasizes 89 lines already in the general corpus, mostly ROS negatives, exam lines by system, HPI openers and disposition lines. The phrases are third person and front-loaded with history, the way they are typed while the provider talks: age, sex, arrival mode, onset times and pain scores. They cover ED and clinic visits, narrated orders, timed re-evaluations and the attestation lines that go on every chart. Examples with shorthand on:

  • Pt is a 48 y/o female presenting w/ right-sided weakness and slurred speech, last known well 0930
  • Cardiovascular: positive for chest pain, negative for palpitations and leg swelling
  • Ears: R TM erythematous and bulging, L TM clear
  • Ordered 1 L LR bolus, BCx x2, and lactate
  • On re-evaluation at 1630, pain improved to 3/10 after morphine
  • Scribe attestation: I am scribing for, and in the presence of, the attending physician

Twenty-four report lines cover what a scribe records from the provider: EKG interpretations, preliminary x-ray reads and bedside ultrasound, such as "Bedside RUQ US: gallstones w/o wall thickening". Smaller sets add ED decision rules and scores: HEART, PERC, Wells, Canadian CT head, NEXUS and Centor. The abbreviation toggle switches every pack phrase between its spelled-out and shorthand forms.

Using the scribe role with a specialty

You can set a role and a specialty together. The specialty loads a vocabulary pack that is mixed in at roughly half of the draws, and the role then reweights note types across everything, including the specialty's own lines. With emergency medicine selected, you get ED vocabulary with the history and exam emphasis of the scribe role; with dermatology, the pack's history and exam lines are favored over its procedure notes. The category chips filter both packs, so Note Phrases alone gives you scribe lines, specialty note lines and general note lines together. AI Mode works on top of the role and the specialty, steering the stream toward your own weak key transitions.

Typical sessions

The ED shift warm-up preset uses phrases, symptoms, imaging reads and brand drugs with shorthand on and cascade mode, which lets mistakes pass as they do in real time. The HPI and ROS drill is spelled out, with no doses and block mode, which stops on every error so you build accuracy on long history lines. The third preset adds the emergency medicine pack.

If you are preparing for a hiring screen, the medical scribe typing test page covers what employers post and how to use the timed test. No account is needed; progress stays in your browser.

Common questions

Does the scribe role change how my speed is scored?

No. The role only changes which lines you are given. WPM, accuracy and the per-key stats are measured the same way whatever role you pick.

Can I use the scribe role without a specialty?

Yes. With the specialty left on General, you get the scribe pack and the reweighted general corpus, which covers both emergency department and clinic charting.

Why do I see fewer nursing and consult lines?

The scribe role turns those note types down because they are rarely part of a scribed chart. They are not removed, and you can set the role back to Not specified at any time.
