Medical Terminology Typing Practice
Most clinical typing errors happen inside long words rather than between them. This page covers the letter patterns, eponyms, and look-alike drug names that cause them, and how the trainer's terminology categories are organized.

Where terminology typos come from
Medical vocabulary is built from Greek and Latin pieces with spelling patterns that ordinary English rarely uses. The trainer's corpus of diseases, anatomy, drugs, procedures, and lab names concentrates these patterns, and a few of them account for most errors.
- Doubled and silent consonants
- diarrhea, hemorrhage, arrhythmia, pneumothorax, phlegmon. The rh, rrh, pn, and phl clusters do not exist in everyday typing.
- Long compound words
- esophagogastroduodenoscopy, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, choledocholithiasis. The fix is to type them as their parts: esophago, gastro, duodeno, scopy.
- Eponyms with capitals
- Crohn disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, Adson test, Westermark sign. A capital mid-stream costs a shift key and breaks rhythm.
- Numbers inside words
- 21-hydroxylase deficiency, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 5' nucleotidase, NYHA class III.
- Generic versus brand capitalization
- Generic names are lowercase (apixaban); brand names are capitalized (Eliquis). The trainer keeps these in separate categories so you can practice each convention deliberately.
Look-alike drug names
Certain drug pairs are close enough in spelling that a fast typist's fingers autocomplete the wrong one. Practicing both members of a pair in the same session is the most reliable fix, and the Drugs · Generic category includes all of these.

How the terminology categories are organized
The corpus is split into Diseases, Drugs · Generic, Drugs · Brand, Anatomy, Physiology & Labs, Procedures, and Symptoms & Signs, plus two phrase-level categories for note phrasing and imaging or pathology findings. Each is a toggle, so a session can be limited to one category or mix any combination. With term frequency set to Realistic, common items such as metformin or hypertension appear far more often than rare ones such as 11-beta-hydroxylase deficiency, which mirrors what you will type in practice. Set to Even, every item is equally likely, which is better for learning the full vocabulary.
A drill that works
Pick one category, set frequency to Even, and use Block error mode so the stream stops until each error is fixed. Type for five minutes and watch the per-key heatmap. Then switch to the same category in Cascade mode and try to hold the same accuracy at a higher speed. Rotate categories by day rather than mixing everything at once; a session of only anatomy or only generic drugs teaches the letter patterns faster than a mixed stream does.
