Pediatrics Typing Practice
The Pediatrics pack loads clinic, inpatient and nursery vocabulary into ClinicalTypingLab, a free trainer that streams clinical note text for you to type. It adds 1,188 items of its own and gives extra weight to 313 general items that pediatric notes use often.

What pediatric notes are made of
Pediatric numbers only make sense against age. A weight is incomplete without its percentile, a head circumference comes with the state of the anterior fontanelle, and a newborn's bilirubin means little without the hours of life. Well-child visits repeat the same structure every time: growth, milestones, screening results, vaccines given, and guidance on sleep, car seats and feeding.
Sick visits are shorter but just as patterned. The history counts days of fever, the highest temperature, intake and wet diapers, and the exam checks the tympanic membranes, work of breathing and hydration. Inpatient notes track high-flow oxygen in L/kg/min, albuterol spacing and fluid boluses in mL/kg. Nursery and NICU notes add gestational age, day of life, corrected age and percent weight loss. Nearly every prescription is weight-based, written as mg/kg per dose or mg/kg/day divided, with a maximum.
What the pediatrics pack adds
The pack holds 650 note phrases and 94 report lines, plus single terms for diseases, drugs, anatomy, labs and scores, procedures and exam findings. The phrases follow well-child and sick visits, adolescent visits with confidential time and HEEADSSS screening, inpatient care for bronchiolitis, asthma, febrile infants and DKA, the newborn nursery and NICU, and child protection. The report lines are pediatric reads: chest films, pyloric and hip ultrasound, intussusception, fracture patterns, echo z-scores and EEGs. A few lines from the pack, some in shorthand form:
- Weight 5.6 kg at the 45th percentile, length 58 cm at the 50th percentile
- Walking independently, uses 2 words besides mama and dada, points to show interest
- Transcutaneous bilirubin 9.8 at 36 hours of life, more than 3 below the phototherapy threshold
- Placed on HFNC 2 L/kg/min, FiO2 40%
- Former 27 wk preterm, DOL 14, CGA 29 wk
- Coronary arteries normal in caliber, LAD z-score 1.1, RCA z-score 0.8
- Ceftriaxone 50 mg/kg IM, 450 mg for weight 9 kg
Dosing strings cover 139 drugs, most of them weight-based with a frequency and a maximum, and with the indication written in when the dose depends on it. With the dosing slider above zero, amoxicillin can appear as amoxicillin 80 to 90 mg/kg/day po divided bid x 10 days for acute otitis media, max 4 g/day. Ondansetron comes with ODT doses by weight band. Vaccine lines record what was given and do not state a schedule.
How to practice with the pediatrics pack
Choose Pediatrics from the Specialty menu above the category chips. About half of what you type then comes from the pack and the rest from the general corpus. The chips still filter both, so Note Phrases on its own gives you pediatric note lines mixed with general ones. The Abbreviations toggle switches every pack phrase and report line between its spelled-out form and shorthand such as HOL, DOL, CGA, %ile and WOB.
For clinic lines, turn on Note Phrases, Physiology & Labs and Symptoms & Signs, set Abbreviations to Full, and use Block mode, which stops the stream until you fix each error. A slipped digit in a percentile or a bilirubin value changes its meaning. For ordering practice, turn on both drug chips and set the dosing slider to 80 percent or more. Even term frequency gives uncommon drugs the same chance as common ones.
Ten to fifteen minutes on one setup is enough to show a pattern in the per-key heatmap. Once your accuracy holds, switch to Cascade, which lets errors pass and gives a truer speed reading. AI Mode works on top of the pack and steers the stream toward your slow key transitions. You do not need an account, and your progress stays in your browser. For adult and mixed-age clinic work, see family medicine.
Common questions
Are the pediatric doses weight-based?
Most are. The dosing strings are written the way pediatric orders are, in mg/kg per dose or mg/kg/day divided, with a frequency and a maximum, and a few drugs use weight bands. They are there to practice typing the format, not to serve as a dosing reference.
Does the pack cover the newborn nursery and NICU?
Yes, at the level general pediatric notes need: gestational age, day of life, corrected age, weight loss, bilirubin against the phototherapy threshold, CPAP and high-flow settings, and neonatal drugs such as caffeine and surfactant. NICU parenteral nutrition calculations are left out.
Will I only see pediatric text?
No. About half the draws come from the pack and the rest from the general corpus, so adult medicine terms still appear. To narrow the stream, turn off the categories you do not need; the chips filter pack and general items alike.
