ClinicalTypingLab: Medical Typing Test and Clinical Documentation Trainer
A Vernacular Vitals project.
ClinicalTypingLab is a free medical typing test and trainer built from real clinical
note vocabulary. It is designed for medical students, residents, physicians, medical
scribes, and medical transcriptionists who want to type clinical documentation faster
and more accurately. Instead of everyday English, it drills the dense, symbol-heavy
language of real notes: disease names, generic and brand drug names, realistic dosing
strings, laboratory values, radiology and pathology findings, and progress note,
discharge summary, and consult phrasing with toggleable clinical shorthand.
The trainer requires JavaScript. The guides below work without it.
- Medical Typing TestWhat the test measures, how to read your WPM and accuracy, and where clinicians usually lose speed.
- Medical Typing for Medical StudentsWhat to drill in the preclinical years versus clerkships, and a four-week plan before your first rotation.
- Medical Scribe Typing TestWhat scribe typing screens look like, the WPM each employer posts, and how to practice on clinical text.
- Clinical Documentation TypingThe structure of an H&P, SOAP note and discharge summary, an abbreviation reference, and the do-not-use list.
- Medical Terminology Typing PracticeThe letter patterns, eponyms and look-alike drug names that cause most terminology typos, and how to drill them.
- Medical Typing PracticeHow to structure sessions, use the error modes and category toggles, and get past a speed plateau.
- Medical Transcription Typing Test PracticeHow transcription tests differ from scribe tests, and how to build accuracy on spelled-out reports.
- Typing Practice for Nursing StudentsMedication names, doses, and assessment charting for nursing students and new graduates.
- Common Medical Abbreviations in Clinical NotesAbbreviations grouped by note section, from HPI through plan, plus the do-not-use list.
- Specialty typing practiceChoose a specialty pack: each adds about a thousand terms, findings, drugs with doses, and note lines for that field.
- Typing practice by roleScribe, nursing, medical student, or resident and physician: each role shifts which note types the stream emphasizes.
- How AI Mode worksThe model behind AI Mode: expected cost per transition, personal residuals, shrinkage, lanes, and how the stream is reweighted.
