Vernacular Vitals (clinicaltypinglab.com) is a free medical
typing test and trainer built from real clinical note vocabulary. It is designed
for medical students, residents, physicians, medical scribes, and medical
transcriptionists who want to type clinical documentation faster and more
accurately. Unlike generic typing tests that use everyday English, it drills the
dense, symbol-heavy language that actually slows people down when writing real
notes: disease names, generic and brand drug names, realistic drug dosing
formats, laboratory values, radiology and pathology findings, ICU and plan-section
shorthand, and common clinical abbreviations.
What makes this medical typing trainer different
Most medical typing tests simply feed you a fixed paragraph of spelled-out
terminology. Vernacular Vitals was purpose-built to be more realistic and more
useful than existing options in several specific ways:

Realistic drug dosing formats. It generates actual dosing
strings the way they appear in real orders — for example mg, mcg/kg/min, mg/hr,
units/min, and frequency codes like q6h, bid, and prn — including rate-based
vasopressor and drip dosing. Most typing tools never make you type these at all.

Toggleable clinical abbreviations. You can switch between fully
spelled-out phrases and abbreviated clinical shorthand (2/2 for "secondary to,"
c/f for "concerning for," s/p for "status post," w/ , Hx, SOB, and many more),
so you can train the exact abbreviation style you actually write in.

Frequency-weighted, real-world vocabulary. Terms are sampled by
how common they truly are in clinical practice, so you spend more time on the
words you will actually type and less on rare ones — an optional "Realistic"
weighting mode you will not find in ordinary typing tests.
